Before meeting my boyfriend, I was never a fan of PDA. I always felt uncomfortable and judged kissing in public. I was horrified at the beginning of my relationship to find out that my boyfriend loves PDA. He's constantly kissing, cuddling, and touching me. Although it made me feel so weird at first, I love it now. Like Kristen said, I think it's really cute that he is the loving, emotional one in the relationship. I like that we are less traditional and he doesn't fit the male stereotype of being opposed to PDA.
I thought this poem was really interesting and sweet. Even though it was short, the poem really illustrated how much the couple was in love and everyone in the airport could tell. I love how Bass wrote about older lovers because love is often depicted to be between young people. It's rare but refreshing to read about. People usually assume that older couples have lost their spark, but this poem definitely shows a couple that hasn't lost their flame.
I agree, Cassie. I think that's why people in the airport were staring. It's not really that unusual to see people kissing in a airport, but sometimes you see people together and you can sense their deep affection, respect, and admiration for each other. And usually we see images that are supposed to represent this type of love only through media images that include young, beautiful, photoshopped couples.
ReplyDeleteHow is this image of love that Bass expresses in this poem relevant to the readings this week?
Also, this reminds me of these images I saw on facebook. Someone photoshopped famous couple onto "normal" bodies and styles. Interesting to this about the way we see love between people when we see it as styled and "classy" versus the everyday.

I like the fact that older lovers were mentioned as well. Young people tend to be identified as lovers who then marry, and then after marriage the lovers become boring parents with responsibilities. Older people are no longer viewed as lustful beings, which is wrong. These are the types of love that last and are true. The photo shopped types aren't real love, but when the couple embraced at the airport, it was obvious that they really loved each other. After a while of being separated it was only natural to feel that type of affection and want to show it. You don't need to be beautiful or photo shopped to be in love, and I think that's what the reading was getting at--that ordinary people can be in love.
ReplyDeleteI also really enjoyed that older lovers were included in this poem. Usually when people think of love, they think of young, attractive, heterosexual individuals and it is nice to see a person discuss older lovers. Within love, inclusive language should always be used instead the usual exclusive language that is often used. I also really enjoyed that this poem was set in an airport because I find that in airports, the truest forms of love are shown.
