Our Violent Economy is Hurting Women

Despite all of the progress that  women have made, rape and other forms of violence against women unfortunately still exist. Vandana Shiva claims that the increase in domestic violence is due to the status of the economy. Men feel entitled to lash out at women because of the social issues that are troubling them. Since we live in a patriarchal society, it is considered socially acceptable for men to be strong and aggressive beings, but there is a fine line between strength and violence.

Although there are certain laws that punish those that hurt women, a lot of the violence goes unreported. Many women who are abused choose to keep it hidden from others for a variety of reasons. By not reporting these crimes, however, society is teaching young girls that it is okay to be treated in this way.  These impressionable girls will then enter abusive relationships in which violence is a daily horror.  Violence against women needs to end , and sooner than later.

  1. I think Shiva's ideas about the economy are really interesting and unique, but they might be a little out there. Is she maybe reaching for a relationship between two things that really have nothing to do with one another? I'm not exactly sure, but social issues have definitely influenced the treatment of women.

  2. I do completely agree with the fact that by not reporting the crimes, that society is teaching young girls the wrong thing. However, in a country like India, this happens a lot (not saying this is okay). Many girls are scared what society would think of them and how humiliated her and her family would be if people found out that she got raped. Women who have been raped, needs to be comfortable with who she tells and how people will treat her.

  3. I agree with Ravi. There is a lot of victim blaming and girls feel unable to report these crimes for fear of social isolation and judgement. Women aren't feeling comfortable reporting these crimes therefore, there isn't being much done to stop them. Teaching women that hiding these crimes is creating a cycle where it has become acceptable for men to rape women. These men aren't being punished and there are no repercussions for their crimes. This cycle will continue until society stops blaming victims for being raped.
